Newsletter

Whether you are a CTO, a Senior Software Engineer, or a Junior Developer, this newsletter is for you!

The newsletter covers software engineering best practices and addresses common anti-patterns that can be found in every team.

Sign up now, and get advice on how to succeed with DevOps, Agile, and Test-first Programming straight to your inbox:

I’ll keep you posted with a few emails per month. You can, of course, opt out at any time.

This newsletter is all about improving your Software Delivery Performance. That means you will get advice on advanced software engineering practices usually not covered in any training. For instance:

  • ✅ How to ship features earlier with Emergent Design
  • ✅ How to succeed with writing Tests first
  • ✅ How to ship more features with Pair Programming
  • ✅ How to test your Single Page App through the Accessibility API
  • ✅ How to not lose momentum with an always Clean Codebase

But you will also get a behind-the-scenes look at widespread development practices that actually drag your performance down like an anchor. For instance:

  • ❌ Working with Pull Requests and Branches
  • ❌ Applying the DRY principle
  • ❌ Using Planning Poker to estimate User Stories
  • ❌ Writing tests after a feature is implemented
  • ❌ Creating the UI/UX design before working on a User Story

The points above are some of the reasons why software engineering is so expensive.

It’s not just mismanagement or inflated salaries due to the talent shortage. A major contributing factor is the practices we choose and the decisions we make on a daily basis.

Some of the things our teammates and we do daily have a significant negative impact on our team’s ability to deliver features efficiently.

The truth is, indirectly, some of the items above actually cause people to leave their current jobs!

And it’s not just a few people – the vast majority of software engineering teams are affected.

But how is that possible?

Well, it’s a mix of different reasons.

First, there is the human factor. Some of the decisions we make lead to counter-intuitive consequences down the road.

Then, there is the education system. Some things they teach us in college or university do not apply anymore.

And last but not least there’s the internet. Some of the information on the internet is simply wrong (and repeated over and over again).

That’s why in this newsletter, I’d like to call out the bullshit and suggest better alternatives.
